BOBCAT NEWS

FEBRUARY

February 2010

Dear North Windham Parents and Guardians,

February will be the month that we pass our 100th day of this school year!  It seems incredible that we are this far into the school year!

Winter is still with us and we are trying to get the students outside for recess on as many days as we can (it has to be over 20 degrees).  We know that the kids want to play in the snow and we are allowing it if they have boots and snow pants.  Unfortunately, we do not have enough change of clothes that would be needed if kids get wet while they are outside.  Thanks for your help with this.

We continue to work very hard with your students and are doing many assessments to see how they are progressing.  We are also working on preparing our 3rd and 4th graders for the Connecticut Mastery Tests that they will be taking during the first part of March.  We encourage all of you to assist your students by having them practice their reading and math skills, at home, as much as you can.  We are seeing that kids are making good improvements with their skills but that they need a lot of practice applying them!

We hope that you will be able to come to our Math Is Out of This World NightBecause of our latest winter weather, we had to reschedule it to Thursday, Feb. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m..  We hope to see you there!!

We are beginning our new reading initiative, Read a Blizzard of Books. Please read with your children each day and record the books you read on a piece of paper and have the kids bring it to school.  During the Fall, the students read over 2000 books, reaching their goal that allowed us to have an all school, hip hop assembly!!!  Let’s do it again!!

Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up in March.  We’ll be sending home information in the upcoming weeks. We hope to see you all here!

Sincerely,

Betsy Fernandez

Febrero, 2009

We hope that you will be able to come to our Math Is Out of This World NightBecause of our latest winter weather, we had to reschedule it to Thursday, Feb. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m..  We hope to see you there!!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

What a wonderful time everyone had at our Family Fun Fest!  While the weather didn’t cooperate, forcing us to have the first INSIDE Fun Fest, everyone had a great time none the less!  All of the UCONN and Eastern students, the Fire Department, the disc-jockey and all of the parent volunteers worked hard to make it a great time for everyone!  I want to thank our PTO for doing such a great job of putting this together especially since they had to change it to an indoor event at the last minute!

We are approaching a very busy time of the year.  Please pay special attention to the dates and events that are coming up.  With Election Day, Veteran’s Day, Parent/Teacher Conferences and the Thanksgiving break, we have a number of no school and early release days.  We know that this can be difficult  but we will be working hard to keep your students learning and focused.

As mentioned above, we will be doing Parent/Teacher conferences on November 18th and 19th. We will offer conference times both afternoons and on the evening of November 18th.  Hopefully we will be able to accommodate everyone’s schedules.  If it does not, please contact your child’s teacher to see if another time can be found.  We look forward to seeing you here!

Sincerely,

Betsy Fernandez

Harvest a Good Book!!!

Please encourage you students to Read, Read, Read!!!  We are trying to reach a goal of 2000 books and we are well on our way!  So far, students have read…….books!  Once we hit 2000 we will be having a SPECIAL school wide assembly!

Queridos Padres y Guardianes,

Atentamente,

Betsy Fernandez

OCTOBER 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are off to a good and busy start to this school year!  We have been teaching and reminding the students of our school expectations including being a responsible student, and learning the routines in the classroom, on the bus and within the building.  In addition, we have been assessing the students’ skills and forming academic groups.  We are finding that most students are settling in and getting down to work. We have appreciated your support and collaboration as we have worked on these important skills!

It was great to see so many of you at our Open Houses and we thank the PTO for once again providing ice cream for the students who attended!

Finally, thank you to all of the parents who came to our September PTO meeting!  We had many new faces and we are looking forward to having the PTO and the school staff work together to do wonderful things for our school!

Safety Patrol

Thanks to our wonderful Safety Patrol students who are doing a great job of helping to keep our hallways safe!  Our Patrolers are: Capt. Allen Sfakios, Lieutenants Jenessa Loree, Nathan Perez-Espitia,  and Trevor Boulay; Patrolers Jayde Campbell, Maiena Kheyabani, Emma Vining, Tyler Lemire, Medina Kheyabani, Neydian Ramos, Dianarys Serrano, Ailin Cuevas, and Jomar Rivera.

Bus Safety

When dropping your children off in the morning we ask that everyone drop them off in the parking lot to the side of the building.  We’ve had some students dropped in the front of the building when buses are coming and going and this is not safe.  Students have been running in front of or between the buses and the drivers can not always see down below the front of the bus.

In addition, when you do drop students in the parking lot, please drive slowly as the lot is very congested.  Thanks for your cooperation!

Student Attendance

Our attendance line phone number is: 465-2406.  Please call that number when you call to report an absence.   We appreciate parents keeping their students home when they are not feeling well.   This will help to keep others from getting ill.

Because we don’t want to encourage children who are sick to come to school, this year we will be recognizing not only those students who have Perfect Attendance (attend all day, everyday), we will also recognize those students who have Excellent Attendance (attend all day, everyday at least 95% of the days).

Cafeteria News

Please remind your students that they will only be allowed to have three charges in their lunch accounts.  After that they will receive a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk until the account is paid.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call Tammy Toussaint, our Cafeteria Manager, at 465-2407.

Compañeros News

As many of you know, this year we have 9 classroom teachers instead of 10.  Mr. Pope is our only grade 4 teacher and as such he is teaching his class differently from the grade 1 – 3 classes.  He will be teaching Reading in English and will be teaching Math, Social Studies and Science in Spanish.  Students will still be working on reading Spanish but they will receive the instruction through Social Studies and Science.

We are planning our first Parent Advisory Council meeting for Oct.22 at 4 p.m… We hope to see as many Compañeros parents as possible as we talk about the program and plan events for the Compañeros parents and families!

Family Fun Fest

Please join us for our Annual Family Fun Fest on Saturday, October 3rd from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.!   There will be food, games and a great time for everyone!

Fourth Grade Parents: Graduation Date: Mark Your Calendars!

The Fourth Grade graduation ceremony will be held on June 10 at 2 p.m..  We will hold it on this day and time regardless of any extra days that we may need to do because of snow days.  We hope to see all parents there!

Queridos Padres y Guardianes,

DECEMBER NEWSLETTER  ( for Jan.)

Dear Parents and Guardians of North Windham Students,

On behalf of all of the staff at North Windham School , we wish you all a very happy and healthy 2009!!  We hope that everyone is returning to school rested and ready to get back to work!!

With the inauguration coming up, we are looking at ways to include our students in on this historical event.  As a staff, we feel that it is important for our students to be aware of and for most to watch as our new president is inaugurated.  Please talk to your child about what this event means to you and about what you want them to learn from these changing times.

We have much to prepare for in the coming months.  Our third and fourth graders will be continuing to work very hard to prepare for the Connecticut Mastery Tests that they will be taking in March.  In addition, we will be doing several “benchmark” assessments with all of our students to see how they are all progressing towards their grade level goals, and what changes we need to make to help them make better/more gains.  If you have any questions or concerns about how your student is doing please feel free to call your student’s teacher.

Along these lines, we are pleased with the progress that so many of the kids are making.  We are finding that the kids who are practicing their reading and math at home are really showing great improvements.  Anytime you can, have your child read to you or you read to them, practice or play number games and encourage them to write..  Make it fun rather than a chore or punishment.  The extra practice will really help!

Hopefully, many of your children brought home Paw-Fection notes during the month of December. We gave these out to recognize those students who were doing a good job of following any one of our school wide rules: Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Safety.  We were able to give out lots of these notes and were very proud of the students.  Ask your children about what it means to follow these expectations here at school and at home!

 Important Events in January

Notes From the Compañeros Parent Advisory Council

Thank you to all families who ordered the calendars and tee shirts!  We hope that you will enjoy these!

We encourage parents who are considering putting their incoming Kindergartener for the 2009-2010 school year, in the lottery for the Compañeros Program, to attend the March 16th Advisory Meeting.   We will have parents and teachers on hand to give an overview of the program and will answer any questions you might have.

Student Attendance

As we continue to work hard to make sure that your student meets all of their grade level benchmarks, we encourage you to make as many dental, medical and the like, appointments for before or after school. In addition to the fact that we are required to count your student absent if they are here for less than half of the school day, we have so much to teach your children that missing even a few hours can cause your child to miss some valuable learning.

Also, we understand that for some families the only time that they can take family vacations is during school time.  While we hope that this will happen infrequently and while we can not count these days as excused absences, we will make every effort to provide work for your student if you 1)Let us know of the absence at least two weeks in advance and 2) you ask for the work.  Thanks for your cooperation!

The Ossen Fund

North Windham School has had the good fortune to receive money from the Ossen Fund which helps to bring the arts to our school.  This year the Ossen Fund will be providing artists-in-residence and assemblies.  In February, Christin Shortt and the CT Concern Ballet will be in our school teaching us about ballet and performing excerpts from The Nutcracker.  Later in the spring we will see a presentation of Hansel and Gretel performed by UCONN’s Opera Co..  We are thankful for these opportunities supported by Eileen Ossen!

Thanks to Our Pie Sellers!

Our pie sale to raise money to replace some of our playground equipment was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who participated!  Our top sellers were Emily Adams from Mrs.. DeJesus’s class, Olivia Baribeault from Mrs. Arpin’s, Mariah Howlett from Mrs. Potter’s, Jordan Nye from Mrs. Krukoff’s and Mia Ray for Ms. Nagler’s class!  They will each receive a $10 gift certificate to Border’s Books at the East Brook Mall !

Notes From the Nurse

We frequently have to give children a change of clothes for a variety of reasons.  We are running low on clothes to loan out to children so if anyone has some gently used sweatpants, jeans, socks or any other clothes (we need all sizes, especially small) that you are willing to donate, we would really appreciate it!

Also, as we are deep into these winter months, please remember to send your child to school dressed warmly.  We do take the students out to recess as long as it is not raining or snowing AND it is 20 degrees or warmer.

News From the PTO

All newsletters can be found on the PTO website : http://www.nwspto.com/.  Parents will also be able to find memos that have been sent home, photos, PTO meeting minutes, lunch menus and other important information.

We encourage parents to come to our January 13th meeting at 6:30 p.m. and ask that you bring ideas for a Spring, PTO sponsored event!!

 Toys and Electronics

We need your help.  Students are starting to bring toys and electronics to school that not only take their focus from learning but also causing some disturbance as some of these have gotten lost, taken or in some cases, even sold!  Please make sure that your child leaves all toys and valuables at home.  Thanks for your help with this!

Notes from the Helping Hands

We’d like  to thank all the teachers at North Windham School , parents and students who have contributed used books to replace/help out with the pre-school library that was badly damaged during the Kramer fire.

We have collected over 527 books!!!!!

Thanks to Stan, Katie (UConn interns) and the Third Grade Helping Hands Group for collecting them!

 Wild About Math Night

Come and join the fun on January 29th from 6:30 p.m.—8 p.m. (snow date is Feb. 5th)!  We will have lots of Math games for your kids to play to reinforce what they have been learning.  This is also a great event where parents can learn some math games and activities that you can play with your kids at home!  We hope to see you there!

NOVEMBER NEWS LETTER

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe that it is December already!  This year is flying by!  We are so pleased with the progress that your students are making!

It was good to see so many of you here for Parent/Teacher conferences!  Hopefully you had a good meeting with your child’s teacher and had any questions that you might have had, answered.  If for some reason you were not able to schedule a conference and you would like one, please give your child’s teacher a call and I’m sure that they will be able to accommodate you.

We’d like to thank the Olympic Pizza, who donated a wonderful dinner and our great PTO for providing incredible desserts for the teachers on the Wednesday night of conferences!  This was very thoughtful of them and gave the teachers some time to relax and enjoy a good meal between conferences! Thank you!!

As we continue to teach our students our school wide rules, we are planning to give out Paw-Fection Notes during the first week of December. These notes will be given out by all staff, to students who are doing a great job of following the rules: Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Safety.  Look for these notes to come home during that week!

On behalf of all of the staff here at NWS we’d like to thank our UCONN interns, Liz Hines and Cassie Cosentino who have been helping us teach the students how to follow the school rules in the different parts of our school!

As many of our third and fourth grade parents know, we have been involved in a pilot for the state over the last couple of weeks.  The pilot has involved our third and fourth graders who have been taking an on-line benchmark assessment in both reading and math.  Windham is one of several school districts that have been asked to participate in the pilot of Measurement Incorporated Secure Test (MIST) three times this year.  The purpose of the test is to see how students are doing in terms of mastering the Grade Level Expectations (GLE) and hopefully give us additional information as we prepare them for the Connecticut Mastery Test.  All school districts will be required to take MIST starting the 2009-2010 school year.

As we move into this holiday season all of us at North Windham School wish you Happy Holidays!

OCTOBER NEWS LETTER

Dear Parents and Guardians,

What a wonderful time everyone had at our Family Fun Fest!  I want to thank our PTO for doing such a great job of putting this together!  The games, the demonstrations by the Fire Department, the LIFESTAR helicopter, the happy people and the spectacular day made it all so much fun!  Thank you everyone who helped make it such a great day!

If you are a 3rd or 4th grade parent you should have received your child’s CMT scores from last year.  Overall, we were pleased with the gains that our students made and have made over the last couple of years.  We still have work to do but we are definitely headed in the right direction!  We thank you for your support by working with us to encourage your kids to read, do their homework and generally learn about our world!

As mentioned above, we will be doing Parent/Teacher conferences on November 19th and 20th. We will offer conference times both afternoons and on the evening of November 19th.  Hopefully we will be able to accommodate everyone’s schedules.  If it does not, please contact your child’s teacher to see if another time can be found.  We look forward to seeing you here!

Sincerely,

Betsy Fernandez

Queridos Padres y Guardianes,

Atentamente,

Betsy Fernandez

North Windham School

"The Learning Place"

August 11,2008

Dear North Windham School Parents,

I hope that you have had a wonderful summer filled with relaxing family time! I have had a bit of time off myself and am getting excited about the upcoming year when I will get to meet your students and you!  I am so honored to be here and have learned through my work this summer what a great school community it is that I am joining!!

I want to share a few things with you that I think will assist your child with the transition from summer time to school time.

1. Our first day of school is August 27th for all students grades 1-4.

2. All Kindergarten parents will hear from their teacher in August, so that an appointment can be set up for you and your child to meet with the teacher individually. These appointments will take place on Aug. 27-29. Their First full day of school is on Tuesday, September 2nd. (Your child will also be assigned a half day of school on either the 28th or 29th of August.) This appointment gives you, your child, and the teacher an oppertunity to meet and get to know one another. If you have not heard from your teacher by August 25th, please contact us right away (465-2400).

3. On August 27th, all Grade 1-4 students will go from their buses to their classrooms. We will have staff out and about to guide students. Parents are also welcome to bring their student to school on that day, if they want. At 9 a.m., everyone will gather in the gym so that we can begin our new school year all together. Parents are more than welcome to join us as we welcome the new school year, say the Pledge together and meet our new staff, including myself! While K students will not be starting school on this day, parents are welcome to come to this opening school ceremony with their children.

4. On September 10th we will have our Open House/PTO Ice Cream Social for grades K-2, from 6 p.m.- 7 p.m.. The Open House/PTO Ice Cream Social for grades 3 and 4 will be September 11th, again from 6-7 p.m.. We hope to see you all here!!

5. Teachers will be using the first few weeks to teach our students the school rules: Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Safety and how these rules should be followed through out the day. Our hope is that these rules will help all students to feel welcome, safe and respected at school.

6. In an effort to cut down on the congestion in our small office, at the end of the day, the location of our Student Pick Up will change for this year.

  •  We ask all parents who are picking children up, to come in through the door facing the parking lot.
  • We will unlock the doors at 3:25 p.m. at which time you may come in and go to the Gym where your children will be brought and signed out at 3:30 p.m.
  • If you need to pick your child up before this time then you will continue to do this by coming to the front office and signing them out there.
  • Please make sure that if someone other than yourself is coming to pick up your child that you send in a note with your child, in the morning otherwise, we will not be able to release your child to that person.
  • If you or someone you designate plans to pick up your child each day, please let us know and we will put your child's name on the Everyday Pick Up List.
  • Please make sure that you or the person you designate to pick up your child has a photo identification so that we are sure that we are only releasing your children to people approved by you.
  • If we haven't been notified that you are picking your child up from school we will put your child on their regular bus if it should come before you get to the school.

7. Please make sure that we have current information on your phone numbers, address, emergency contacts and any other information that you think we should have in regards to your child. In addition, please make sure that al immunizations are up to date. If you have questions about this, please call our nurse Meredith Shea.

8. The office hours are 7 a.m. - 3 p.m., through August. Please feel free to come in or contact me at anytime during these hours if you need assistance with anything. The phone number is : 465-2400.

I so look forward to meeting and welcoming your children, and you, back to school for what I hope will be a year of success and joy!!

Sincerely,

Besty Fernandez, Principal
