Many people think of parent groups as being all about bake sales and fundraisers. They may think of power-tripping moms ruling their domain, like Desperate Housewives and Harper Valley PTA. Well, that's good TV but- it's not us. We offer many different ways to make our organization stronger.
North Windham School PTO is about men and women working together toward a common goal. That goal is creating a better school and a better educational experience for our children. We will strive to create an atmosphere where teachers and administrators can do their best work-and so can our children.:
· Aiding teachers by providing needed classroom supplies and teaching aides
· Help build literacy by organizing and running the Book Fairs holding Family reading nights
· Help improve math scores with Family math nights
· Improve the school atmosphere by cleaning, painting and planting
· Enhancing the school community by organizing and running family events and fun nights
· Raise the funding needed to make this the best year yet
· Fund all field trips our students take
· Make entertaining and educational assemblies possible
· Show our teachers, our nurse, our school staff, our students our appreciation with an annual luncheon and small gifts
And that is just a PART of what our PTO does. And it is only a small example of what we CAN do! We want you to join us as we try to organize FAMILY FUN NIGHTS and perhaps MOVIE NIGHTS! And what about that green house? The nature trail fix up?
BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!
There's a lot more to be accomplished and we need your help. Despite what you might see on TV, our parent group is not a bunch of crazed, power-hungry moms. We are moms and dads, uncles and aunts, grandparents and friends who care about children and education. We are welcoming and friendly. We are your neighbors- and we share the same concerns you do. The power of our PTO is only as strong as it’s members. By joining, you have taken the first step working with our community to bettering your child’s educational experience. We welcome your ideas and encourage you to voice your opinions at meetings or through member to member contact.
We know your time is valuable, that is why we ask our members to give us just a few hours a year for the benefit of OUR children.
But that's not the only reason to take part. There have been more than 500 independent research studies about parent involvement. The results are startling. When parents get involved in their children's education, grades go up, test scores go up, and children become more likely to pass and to attend better schools after high school. They have fewer discipline problems and they're less likely to use drugs and alcohol.
Volunteering doesn't mean a huge time commitment. An hour or two a semester makes a big difference. We have jobs to fit your time schedule and interests. We even have tasks that don't involve coming to the school at all.
Won't you join us?
PTO - Why should I join?
Many people tend to shy away from joining a PTO for fear of the word, "Volunteer". WE as members of the PTO are well aware of this as all of us at one time felt the same way. "Why should I join if I have no time or interest in volunteering?"
The answer is simple. While hoping more people would help with our committees and activities is part of our struggles, the main reason we ask that you join us, is to show support for your child's PTO which exists only for the benefit of your child.
The more people who join, the better our organization will be. Together we can make North Windham school the best it can be. And if you do have some time to spare, we would love to see you at meetings, where your input is needed to help make our PTO work better for you and your child!
The PTO meets the first Tuesday of every month in the schools media center at 6:30pm; we would love to have you there so please join us! If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
